Howard Barnes' photo of visitors enjoying the water in August, 1950 near the State Pier, where few swim today even though the harbor is cleaner than it was then. According to his note, the Elks' convention supplied many of the people here. The Boston boat can be seen behind the old sanitary station. The arch-like structure on the wharf was one of two adjustable gangways for boat access, depending on the local 10 foot tides.
