FREEPORT — ITS ORIGIN AND COLOUR

Freeport, created from a dream to an eventual planned city of nearly one quarter of a million people, is located on the island of Grand Bahama, approximately 80 miles East of Palm Beach, Florida.

Grand Bahama island is the most Northerly Island of any sizeable importance in the Bahama chain of islands and cays. The island runs in an East-West direction and at its Westerly end is the large Grand Bahama Hotel on the outskirts of the village of West End. Near the other extremity of the island is the quaint Deep Water Cay Club renowned for its bonefishing.

Freeport, with its 200 sq. miles of territory straddles the central portion of the island. here can be found
a balanced economy of light and heavy industry, commerce and tourism. Good solid pineland with an
abundance of fresh water surrounded by superb white sandy beaches, inland creeks and colourful waters, provide a paradise for bathers, boating, diving and fishing enthusiasts.

The Freeport dream became a reality in late 1955 when the Grand Bahama Port Authority was granted
far-reaching tax, immigration and Customs Duty freedom as well as a considerable land area, in return for planning and developing this new city with a deepwater harbour and other amenities. Due to this freedom from taxation, excellent climate and fine geographical location with regard to world shipping, an offshore Bunkering Terminal was built which attracts ships from all over the world for low cost fuel.

On one side of the ever expanding harbour, the Bahamas Cement Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of United States Steel Corporation has built the most modern and one of the largest cement plants in the world.

A new International Airport is handling four engine jet-prop aircraft with continually increasing loads of
passengers and cargo. A new runway is proposed to handle the largest of pure jet aircraft which will fly
direct from London and New York to Freeport.

Medical facilities as good as, if not superior to any found in this Hemisphere, have been established as
well as schools and other necessities. Acreage and homes are being sold for immediate island living, future retirement or investment.

The Grand Bahama Development Company has built a championship 18-hole Golf Course, club house and marina in a part of Freeport called Lucaya. The large and luxurious Lucayan Beach Hotel, with its casino,
is now open and other large hotels are being built.

It appears in truth that Freeport does have the fifth freedom, "The Freedom to Grow."
